The Earth Institute was established at Columbia University in 1995. The research institute's stated mission is to address complex issues facing the planet and its inhabitants, with particular focus on sustainable development and the needs of the world's poor. The Earth Institute's activities are guided by the idea that science and technological tools that already exist could be applied to greatly improve conditions for the world's poor, while preserving the natural systems that support life on Earth.
CSD is a research unit of the Earth Institute led by Prof. Jeffrey Sachs. It combines cutting edge research, technology, and best practices to translate the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) into meaningful policies and solutions.
On September 25th 2015, countries adopted a set of goals to end poverty, protect the planet, and ensure prosperity for all as part of a new sustainable development agenda. Each goal has specific targets to be achieved over the next 15 years.

In 2012, UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon launched the UN Sustainable Development Solutions Network (SDSN) to mobilize global scientific and technological expertise to promote practical problem solving for sustainable development, including the design and implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Following their adoption, we are now committed to supporting the implementation of the SDGs at local, national, and global scales.
Established in 1990, IISD is an independent, non-profit organization with the mission to promote human development and environmental sustainability through innovative research, communication and partnerships.. It IISD reports on international negotiations, conducts rigorous research, and engages citizens, businesses and policy-makers on the shared goal of developing sustainably.

On July 20th, 2016 the Sustainable Development Solutions Network (SDSN) and the Bertelsmann Stiftung launched the SDG Index and Dashboards – Global Report to provide a report card for tracking SDG progress and ensuring accountability. The report shows how leaders can deliver on their promise and it urges countries not to lose the momentum for important reforms.
One year after the adoption of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and its set of 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDG), its implementation by the local and regional governments is fully underway. In order to support them in this complex task, the Global Taskforce of Local and Regional Governments (GTF), the United Nations Development Program (UNDP) and the United Nations Human Settlements Program (UN-Habitat) have launched the virtual platform www.LocalizingTheSDGs.org

Connect To Learn is a partnership of the Earth Institute at Columbia University, Ericsson and Millennium Promise. Its mission is to address the lack of universal access to quality education, with an emphasis on the marginalized (especially girls), in resource poor settings globally. MP partnerships with Ericsson and regional GSM operators has also helped expand and strengthen GSM network coverage in MP sites .
